Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid

Update 08.16.2010

Today Porsche gave the green light for production of the concept Porsche 918 Spyder.  The plug-in hybrid features a V8, two electric motors, and a lithium ion battery that will produce 500 horsepower.  Fuel efficiency should easily exceed 75 mpg while reaching 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds.   A minimum order of 1,000 vehicles will be required to start production.  Porsche will also introduce the Cayenne S Hybrid in 2011 and possibly a future GT3 R Hybrid in the future.  Save your lunch money now.  Retail estimate for the 918 Spyder is over $650,000.  Does this mean the Tesla becomes the Miata of high performance electric/hybrid cars?

Update 03.21.2011

  • 0-60 3.1 seconds
  • Base price $845,000
  • Production to begin September 2013

Rumor has is the 918 lapped the Nurburgring in 7:20, which is faster than the Corvette ZR-1 and Skyline GT-R. Boo yah! Of course it costs more than 6x the price haha.
